I was raised to believe that a persons word was their honor or integrity. So why do people take advantage of ?

I was raised to believe that a persons word was an extention of their integrity/ honor. Why is it that if someone tells you something that is false or a story , they look at you as a sucker or gullible. Shouldn't you believe it to be true first or always look at them as lying? Where do you draw the line?
